Abstract
This play, written when Pope John Paul II was still Bishop of Krakow, is an exploration of the problems of love and marriage. In each of three acts the author focuses on a different couple -one happily planning their marriage, one long married and unhappy, and the third, children of the first couples, just about to marry but full of doubts. In a series of poetic monologues the characters' hopes and fears, loves and longings are revealed. As a young man Karol Wojtyla was fascinated by the theatre - he acted, wrote plays, and in 1941 helped to found a theatre group: the Rhapsodic Theatre. In Nazi-occupied Poland the group had to operate clandestinely, putting on their performances in cramped conditions in private houses. The form of this play owes much to these circumstances: there are no props or visible action; the 'action' all takes place in the minds of the characters. The play is true to its author, both thoughtful and challenging. As the translator, Boleslaw Taboriski, says in his introduction 'There are no easy solutions. There is no happy end. But there is hope, if only we can reach out of ourselves, see the true face of the other person, and hear the signals of a Love which transcends us'. It is a provocative play, but a hopeful one, and it provides a fascinating insight into the thought and generous heart of Pope John Paul II.
