Description
Robert Southwell, the second son of Sir Richard Southwell, was born in 1561 at Horsham St Faith, one of three ecclesiastical properties awarded to his Granfather for his services as a Commissioner for the suppression of the monastic houses. This grandfather had been an eminent courtier in the reign of Henry VIII, & ironically had sat on the bench at the trial of Henry Howard, to whom Robert addressed the letters of comfort which he later expanded into this book.
